European Heritage Craft Day At Scullion Hurls

Scullion Hurls In European Wide Craft Exhibition Day

Saturday 12 September is European Heritage Craft Day. Local Businesses are gearing up to showcase their products to visitors.

On Saturday 12th September craft businesses across Europe throw open their doors to celebrate their unique craft heritage. We’re no different.

Sez Michael: “We are delighted to form part of this network. Thanks to Tourism NI for facilitating it. We’ve had Open Days previously and they give us an opportunity to showcase out work to the public and allow people to see the work that goes into making and supplying hurls.

“We'll have tea, coffee, juice and lots of home baked goods for all our visitors on Saturday.

“And we've decided to run this part of the day as a fundraiser for a charity, The 'Migrant Offshore Aid Station'. MOAS is working to assist migrants coming into difficulty in trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea amid the current refugee crisis playing out on the borders of Europe.  As well as this we'll run a raffle with among the prizes a handcrafted Scullion Hurl to the size of your choice. All donations, big or small are welcome.”

Micheal added: “Everyone is welcome whether they have an interest in hurling or not. We have a range of handcrafted wooden gifts including unique piece crafted from Dark Hedges wood.”

“At the event you'll be able to watch while we make traditional hurling sticks in our workshop as well as learning all about this great Irish sport which has been played here for over 2000 years!”

He added: “You will see our unique skills at first hand as we craft hurleys, turn wooden bowls and other handmade gifts.

The day will finish with a bang as the Antrim Senior hurling semi final featuring Dunloy and Ballycastle takes place on the neighbouring Loughgiel pitch at 5pm.

Our demo slots are limited so booking is essential.

Please contact Micheal Scullion at 07736648115 to book your slot.

There will be a host of entertainment on the day with something for all the family including target shooting with old school hurls and the chance to try out the exact replica of Liam Watson’s All Ireland winning hurl.

As well as demonstrations of traditional hurl making at the set times of 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30 there will be wood turning
